FUNDRAISING, INCENTIVES & AWARDS

this original Sebastian dealers'
store plaque dates from 1951

Sebastian Miniatures provide a wonderful and inexpensive opportunity for organizations of all types to raise funds, to provide customer incentives and to recognize achievement. For several decades, customized miniatures have been used for this exact purpose, generally with excellent results. A wide variety of figurines, plaques, models, magnets and other designs are available. All figurines are designed by Prescott W. Baston, Sr. and produced by Wayland Studio of Wayland, Massachusetts.

RECENT PROJECTS

Example 1. The Sharon (MA) Historical Society had a Sebastian Miniature of Deborah Sampson (a Revolutionary War heroine) customized with a large base, selling these attractive figures to its members as well as residents of Sharon and friends of their organization.

Example 2. Both the Masons and the Order of the Eastern Star have had many Sebastian Miniatures created. The Masons have chosen to depict historic individuals or historic landmarks of special interest. The OES in recent years have preferred to use original designs that depict specific themes. These have proved extremely popular with the society's members who look forward each year to the newest design, kept secret until formally introduced. Plaque style designs have been frequently used.

Example 3. The Alden Kindred of America, Inc. (descendants of John & Priscilla Alden) have sold many miniatures of these two historic figures. These have been done in both bonded porcelain and pewter. Large numbers have been purchased by the society's members, necessitating reorders from the artist.

Example 4. The Hood Milk Company has used Sebastians for many years for a variety of in-company recognitions and as customer incentives. In addition to figurines, magnets have been recently added. Both bonded porcelain and pewter has been used.

Example 5. The Virginia International Raceway near Danville, VA commissioned, in 2004, a model of their 3.27 mile long sports car race track. This intricately detailed model is used in its customer relations programs. A limited edition pewter version on a lovely wooden base is being used for prizes.

ADDITIONAL IDEAS AND SUGGESTIONS

Sebastian Miniatures can be used (and have been used) in many ways to raise money, to attract more business, to recognize outstanding individuals, dealers or distributions - the list is practically endless. Here are just a few ideas you can think about.

  • your organization is commemorating an anniversary

  • you are sponsoring a special event and want people to remember it

  • as a public or private library, you need a fundraiser

  • your non-profit organization is holding a special event

  • you are holding a family reunion maybe a figurine depicting a family member or couple?

  • you want an eye-catching magnet with your company logo, name and phone number

  • you would like to have a meaningful souvenir for your museum, zoo or other facility

Remember, beautiful Sebastian Miniatures can (as a few examples) be made in the likeness of individuals (real or imaginary), can be modeled after buildings, structures, vessels or vehicles, can feature animals, can use organization logos or can be entirely imaginative. Normally special inscriptions Each is personally sculpted by Prescott W. Baston, Jr. ("Woody") with great attention to detail and, where needed, historical accuracy.

BASIC INFORMATION YOU NEED TO KNOW

If you are a private company, a non-profit organization, a public institution, consider the many possibilities that Sebastian Miniatures can provide for you. Mr. Baston and Wayland Studio will work directly with you all the way.

Small Orders. Generally smaller orders (100 pieces or so) will be handled entirely within the Wayland Studios, working with a highly experienced casting company. In these cases, you may select either bonded porcelain or pewter as your casting medium. Much or all of the painting will be done by Mr. Baston, personally. You may request a limited edition with a set number of pieces, each serially numbered and (optionally) signed by the artist at no additional charge.

Large Orders. If you are looking for a large quantity (no limit), Mr. Baston will still be the sculpturer. However, it is unfeasible to have larger quantities of an item (250 or more) cast and painted in the United States; these are shipped to the Far East. A resin material is used for castings. Our overseas manufacturers have been able to skillfully and precisely duplicate the design and colors. In fact, the result is at least as good as Sebastians previously made exclusively in the United States. By using this approach, the cost savings is great.

Cost. There is a basic sculpting fee associated with each order. Several factors affect this cost item. If you want to use an existing design such as the Bibliophile piece and need only a special base with an inscription, the cost will be quite low, perhaps in the range of $100 or so. For a brand new design, the cost will depend entirely on how elaborate it is which will, of course, determine how much time Mr. Baston needs to spend. If you have a specific design in mind or can compare the design to an existing figurine, Mr. Baston can furnish you a close estimate of the design cost at no obligation.

Other elements of cost depend on the size of the piece, the difficulty of painting, and of course the size of the order. As a general rule, unpainted pewter pieces and painted bonded porcelain pieces (both produced domestically) cost approximately the same. A precise cost will be quoted before the piece goes into production.

How Long Does It Take? Again, there are many variables. A relatively simple piece produced domestically can take as little as three months. You may need to allow at least six months to a year for a more complex piece that needs to be manufactured oversees. So please be sure to plan ahead!

How Much Can I Make? If you are, for example, a non-profit company looking for a successful fundraiser, you typically make at least fifty dollars each on an attractive Sebastian Miniature. With an order of 200, for example, you can perhaps expect to make about ten thousand dollars. Results will, of course, depend on the size of your 'audience.'
