comments/observations Nantucket Whaler

GENERAL INFORMATION. The international whaling industry of the 1800s was centered in New Bedford, MA and on the island of Nantucket off the coast of Cape Cod.  This was a very important industry at the time since many its products satisfied many needs.  Of particular importance was oil for lamps.  The famous Herman Melville novel, Moby Dick, takes place out of New Bedford.  When harpooned, a whale would drag the small boat great distances on what became known as a "Nantucket Sleigh Ride."
