GENERAL INFORMATION. A stranger came to the Marblehead studio and discussed the appeal of an American-made "Infant of Prague," a highly popular icon in Roman Catholicism. Baston agreed to a design of "about $300 worth." The man paid him in cash and left.
Baston sculpted an original and cast six or seven prototypes. A few months later, a detective came to Marblehead and said he had traced the stranger's activities. The money Baston had been paid had been stolen in a spectacular Plymouth, MA postal robbery. Baston asked if he could keep the money. "Certainly," the detective replied, "You've earned it."From Dr. Glenn Johnson's book, The Sebastian Miniature Collection.
