GENERAL INFORMATION. Sam Houston (1793-1863) became a champion of Texas independence from Mexico. As commander-in-chief of he Texas Army, he decisively defeated General Santa Anna at San Jacinto in 1836 and served as president of the new republic until 1844. He retired as governor of Texas (admitted to the Union in 1845) when, in 1861, he refused to join the Confederacy and secede from the Union.
In 1980, Baston mounted these two designs on one base and introduced them as Margaret and Sam Houston (SML-382).From Dr. Glenn Johnson's book, The Sebastian Miniature Collection.
