GENERAL INFORMATION. Jean Lafitte (1780-1826) led a band of privateers and smugglers off the coast of New Orleans to Galveston, Texas. His ships, commissioned by several of the Latin American nations in revolt against Spain, preyed on Spanish commerce. Refusing an offer to aid the British in their attempt on New Orleans, Lafitte and his men assisted Andrew Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans and were pardoned by President Madison. When several members of his colony attacked American property, the U.S. government dispatched a naval force against him in 1821. He retired peacefully.
Baston portrayed Laffite and Catherine, his native wife. From Dr. Glenn Johnson's book, The Sebastian Miniature Collection.
