GENERAL INFORMATION. Peter Stuyvesant (1610-1672), Dutch director general of New Amsterdam (later New York City) beginning in 1647.  Overwhelmed by a surprise English attack, Stuyvesant surrendered New Amsterdam in 1664.  He spent the rest of his life on his Manhattan farm and was buried there under his chapel. now the site of a church, St. Mark's -in-the-Bowery.
Baston's first design had nothing to do with his later portrayal of Peter Stuyvesant in 1960 for the Museum of the City of New York (SML-313).
