GENERAL INFORMATION. John Harvard (1607-1638) was chief founder of Harvard University (named after him in 1638).  He immigrated in 1637 from Southwark, England to Charlestown, Massachusetts (then the Massachusetts Bay Colony).  He was assistant tot he pastor and teaching elder of Charlestown's First Church.  He bequeathed £780 (half of his estate) and his library of 320 volumes toward the founding of the new college.  This gift immortalized his name in American education.
