GENERAL INFORMATION. William Penn (1644) gained a reputation in England for his crusades in favor of religious toleration. In 1682, he journeyed to America where the earliest settlers were already laying out Philadelphia in accordance with his earlier planning. The early history of Pennsylvania is thoroughly influenced by his liberal and freedom-oriented principles.
Baston portrayed Penn with his wife, Hannah. Governor Penn holds the royal charter to the Colony. From Dr. Glenn Johnson's book, The Sebastian Miniature Collection.
