GENERAL INFORMATION. Almost as an accidental prelude to Baston's 1951 Raphael Madonna figurines (SML-169, SML-170, and SML-171), he designed this Christmas ornament in 1943. Portraying in bas relief the Madonna of Chair (Raphael's painting, not in the Pitti Palace, Florence, Italy, the 1 1/4 inch diameter disk has a small wire loop cast into the Ceramastone.
Conceived and issued in a time long before the serious collection of Christmas ornaments, the disks were priced at two dollars and were considered far too expensive. Baston made only 25 for Carbone's "market test" and then the project was stopped. From Dr. Glenn Johnson's book, The Sebastian Miniature Collection.
