GENERAL INFORMATION. In The Merry Wives of Windsor (1598), Sir John Falstaff, knowing that Mistress Ford controls the purse strings in her household, decides to seduce her.  She learns of his scheme and decides to make a fool of him.  Mr. Ford who doubts his wife's fidelity, pretends to be another aspirant for Mistress Ford's favors and engages Falstaff to intercede for him.  After several misadventures, the old lecher learns of their plot.  They pardon him.
