GENERAL INFORMATION.  Franklin Delano Roosevelt as president spanned Prescott Baston's life from age 23 to 36, an incredible 13 years.  Roosevelt took office during the bottom of the nations Depression and presided over the country's participation in New Deal welfare legislation and Lend-lease mobilization.  he emerged in 1945 as the most powerful leader in the world.
Baston portrayed FDR in the early Thirties, before the pressures had taken their toll.  The pose, standing at a railroad car railing, followed the silently-agreed-upon policy of never showing him as crippled.

From 1946 to 1953, Prescott Baston petitioned the Guggenheim Foundation for a great to design all the presidents of the United States for use in educating School children.  The grant was never awarded to him.  In 1947, Baston designed Washington, Lincoln and FDR to demonstrate his plan.  All three designs were issued in 1947 through Carbone, a Boston-based distributor.
