GENERAL INFORMATION.  The R. H. Stearns Co. store in downtown Boston celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1947.  Mr. Schultze, president of the company, ordered 500 figurines depicting an 1840's couple shopping together.  The design, with 1947 cast in the base, was sold for $1.00 through store sales, contests and an elaborate Christmas mail program.  Altogether, Baston produced 8,500 figurines in 1947 and 1948.
In 1948 he removed the "1847" and sold the design as the "Godey Couple, dressed in costumes illustrated in Godey's Ladies Book.  In 1958 he placed the couple on an ornate base for inclusion with other couples as "Victorian Couple."
