GENERAL INFORMATION. As with Dickens, Prescott Baston had read all of Mark Twain's work.  But unlike some of the more obscure Dickens favorites (Pecksniff, Barkis, etc.), Baston went right to the most popular characters in Twain's most popular novel, Tom Sawyer (1876).  Here Tom is trying to figure out a way to avoid the fence painting.  His cat, after the medicine, is duly apprehensive.
In 1958, Baston placed the design on a pen stand base inscribed "Carmote Paint" and sold 200 to the Carpenter-Morton Piant Company for their promotional use.
