GENERAL INFORMATION. Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864), American author with his roots deeply embedded in New England, was the beginning of another Baston literary series, The House of Seven Gables. Hawthorne is portrayed here at his desk in the Boston Customs House where he worked during the period before his writing career had begun. Baston depicts the three-legged stool he described in one of his novels and shows Hawthorne holding a replica of his account book which is on exhibit at the Customs House.
