GENERAL INFORMATION. Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) author of the Declaration of Independence, founder of the University of Virginia, overseer of the Louisiana Purchase and third President of the Unite States, joined Baston's gallery of presidents in 1949. Baston's characterization is inspired by the Rudolph Evans statue of Jefferson in the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, DC. dedicated six years earlier.
