GENERAL INFORMATION.  Baston designed Oliver Twist as the final character in the Dickens series except for Charles Dickens himself (SML-208) and a base to house the collection in 1966 (SML-347).
The novel Oliver Twist (1837-1839) depicts the world of poverty, crime and the workhouses of 19th century London.  Baston depicts young Oliver clutching the cuff of the parish beadle (an inferior church officer having a variety of minor duties).  He is being led from the orphanage to his job as apprentice to an undertaker.  He has all his worldly possessions in "a box six inches square and four inches deep."

Note: Baston designed a six-sided (hexagonal) base (SML-347) for his Dickens characters, locking them mechanically to a cottage background (SML-61) display. In 1946 he applied for a patent to protect this design motif and he cast the term "Patent Pending" into the base of each Dickens figurine.  In 1953 he was informed that the patent was denied.  All Dickens production form 1946 to 1953 bears the term "Patent Pending."
