GENERAL INFORMATION. Donald McKay (1810-1880) is the third figure in Baston's China Trade Series. McKay is portrayed in his Boston shipyard with the half-model of his first Yankee Clipper, Staghound. The model is mounted on an elaborate billethead. McKay is persuading financiers that a slender, fast ship will earn more money than a pot-bellied slow packet. In 1869, his Glory of the Seas made a record run of 94 days from New York to San Francisco. he built several ships for the Union Navy during the Civil War.
