GENERAL INFORMATION. This pair, from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night (1600), represent some of the finest low comedy in Shakespeare. Malvolio is Olivia's steward. He is a pompous fool who secretly aspires to her love. Annoyed by his conceit, others concoct a scheme to turn Olivia against him. A letter is forged in her handwriting, leading him to believe she returns his love. he is conned into smiling continuously, wearing cross garters and yellow, the color she abhors. When Olivia shows astonishment at his absurd behavior, he keeps quoting parts of the letter until he is shut up in a dark room as a lunatic.
