GENERAL INFORMATION. The House of Seven Gables, inspiration for Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel, is located in Salem, Massachusetts, adjacent to Marblehead. Following his 1948 House of Seven Gables design (SML-111), the House of Seven Gables Foundation, organized to maintain the building, requested that Baston design a series for sale to visitors. The results were Phoebe, Penny Shop, Judge Pyncheon and Holgrave.
Phoebe is the heroine of the novel. She rescues her relatives from their confusion and poverty and lifts a curse from the family. Of all the series designs, Phoebe was least in demand and, hence, rarest. From Dr. Glenn Johnson's book, The Sebastian Miniature Collection.
