comments/observations SML-155B "Synthetic wood" version used a process & material called Repron to achieve a wood-like effect. Some figures were also painted in brown to enhance this effect.  I was used for a limited number of figurines during the mid-1960's.

GENERAL INFORMATION. The Roman Catholic Church of Gloucester, Massachusetts, requested this traditional Portuguese Madonna for distribution to its parishioners.  Many were carried in fishing vessels by members of the local fleet.
In 1956, Baston began distributing the piece through his retail stores. As with St. Joan and St. Sebastian, he tried to lower time and price by gold- and ivory-finishing the piece or casting it in an artificial wood (see SML-169), but the painted pieces remained the most popular.
