GENERAL INFORMATION. The Godey's Lady's Book was the first successful woman's magazine. The magazine, which featured articles by famous authors and colored plates of the latest fashioned, attained a circulation of 150,000 by 1958 and was considered the standards for morals and good taste. When Baston planned a series of children for his retail stores, he researched the Godey's Lady's Books on file at the Essex Institute in Salem, MA. He advertised the line as "Victorian Children from Godey's Lady's Book Story Series," and it long remained the top selling line of all Sebastian Miniatures. The slightly larger scale of the Godey Children than the rest of the miniatures is due to Baston's plan to have hem compete with Hummel figurines.
The sixth and last of 1953's Godey Children series, a young lady dressed in an overstated and stiff child's costume of the 1850s tempts her dog with a morsel. From Dr. Glenn Johnson's book, The Sebastian Miniature Collection.
