GENERAL INFORMATION. IN 1957, Baston, Marjorie and Woody traveled to Jamestown, Virginia, site of the first permanent English settlement in America (established May14, 1607) and the capital of Virginia throughoutthe17th century. Of the old church tower (built circa 1639) and a few gravestones were visible when the National Park Service excavations began in1934.
A tercentenary celebration was held in 1907 and in 1957 the Jamestown Festival Park was built to commemorate the 350th anniversary. The park contains exhibit pavilions and replicas of the first fort and the three ships that brought the first settlers.
While at the park, Baston sold the park gift shop the idea for a series of four pieces: the Church; the Fort; the three ships and a Jamestown glassblower featured in one of the exhibits. Except for the glassblower (SML-277), the series sold slowly and the three other miniatures are rare.From Dr. Glenn Johnson's book, The Sebastian Miniature Collection.
