GENERAL INFORMATION. Baston had worked with a thermometer with his State Street Bank Globe (SML-345). Many of his retailers had asked for a "functional" Sebastian over the years. Using the style reminiscent of his 1942 Children's Band (SML-42 to SML-47), he designed a gardening couple against a backdrop of a vertical Fahrenheit/Celsius thermometer. After he had produced about 100 pieces, he started getting complaints on the thermometers "reading all wrong." He realized it was impossible to accurately calibrate a liquid-cast element with a separate glass rod, and he discontinued the model.
He then cast the man and woman as separate figurines, but they lacked the Sebastian look and ever sold well in stores. He stopped everything in 1968.From Dr. Glenn Johnson's book, The Sebastian Miniature Collection.
