GENERAL INFORMATION. Johnny Appleseed was the nickname of John Chapman (1774-1845), American folk hero. Born in Massachusetts, Chapman wandered westward to Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois and Indiana. For 50 years he led a nomadic existence, preaching and distributing apple seeds to all he met. It is said that the orchards of the four states owe their origins to Chapman's seeds.
Baston originally designed his miniatures for an industry association that promoted Appleseed as "Patron Saint of the Apple Industry." A year later he converted the design to a simple "Johnny Appleseed," a retail miniature. From Dr. Glenn Johnson's book, The Sebastian Miniature Collection.
