GENERAL INFORMATION. The Mt. Rushmore National Memorial is located in Southwest South Dakota, in the Black Hills. There, carved on the face of a mountain and visible for 60 miles, are the enormous busts of four U. S. Presidents (left to right), Washington, Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Lincoln. The sculpture was nearly completed when the sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, died in 1941. it was finished later that year by his son, Lincoln. In all it took 14 years to complete the figures.
Baston was asked by Kay Riordan, owner of the Mountain Company (Mt. Rushmore gift shop), to sculpt a miniature replica for sale in her shop. He sculpted a large one (SML-44) that was judged too large for production and then further scaled down to a miniature that was placed in the retail line. From Dr. Glenn Johnson's book, The Sebastian Miniature Collection.
