GENERAL INFORMATION. Old Ironsides, as she became known during the War of 1812, became a popular subject for the Sebastian line. It is a 44-gun frigate. It was built in Boston in 1797, one of the first six warships commissioned by the new U. S. Congress. The Constitution received its nickname from the fact that her thick, solid oak hull would reject cannonballs. She remains today the oldest commissioned ship of the U.S. Navy and is operated as a museum in Charlestown, Massachusetts.
