The chapel is the burial site of Richard Cardinal Cushing of Boston. Cardinal Cushing was a much beloved archbishop as he served as head of the archdiocese of Boston, Massachusetts. The Cardinal had a special place in his heart for the mentally retarded and it was his wish to be buried here. The Cardinal was a close personal friend of the Kennedy family and he presided at the funeral mass of President Kennedy.

The original chapel was built by St. Francis of Assisi in the town of Assisi, Italy and dates from the 1200s.  The building portrayed in this figurine was built in 1953.  All building materials came from Assisi, Italy.  It is 42 feet in length and 14 feet in width.
