John
Alden - the Cooper (SML-726) AN IMPORTANT NEW FIGURINE! Click here for the artist's story about this figurine Sebastianworld, Inc. and Woody Baston are pleased to announce the introduction of a new series, Colonial People and Their Trades. These figurines will be based on historical figures. They will be entirely designed, sculpted, molded and painted in the USA (as will all new Sebastians, at least for the foreseeable future!). Strictly speaking, this is not entirely a new series but rather a continuation of a number of similar pieces, some of which go back for several decades. You will find several similar figurines listed under the topic Colonial Life and Times. For other figurines associated with Pilgrims, see the topic Pilgrims and Thanksgiving. The first in this series is John Alden—The Cooper. It depicts a satisfied John Alden, sitting on a just-completed barrel, mallet still in hand. The figurine is a little under 3 inches in height. John Alden was a skilled cooper (barrel maker). As such, he was hired as a crewman on the Mayflower to take care of the barrels on the Pilgrims’ perilous crossing. It was a requirement to have a cooper aboard an English vessel before it departed port. John was NOT a Pilgrim at the time he arrived by elected to remain behind when the Mayflower returned to England. The pewter version - the exact size as the bonded porcelain figure and with the same wonderful detail was commissioned in the fall of 2001 by the Alden Kindred of America, Inc. and the Alden House Museum of Duxbury, MA as a fundraiser. It can be ordered directly from the Alden Kindred of America, Inc. through their website (www.alden.org), purchased at their museum shop or obtained directly from the Sebastian dealers listed on this website.
William
Wadsworth Longfellow’s tale of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins is

a descendant of John & Priscilla.) This brand new piece, introduced at the 2001 Sebastian Festival and is available as of the June 23, 2001directly from Sebastianworld Charter Dealers. It will also be available at the Annual Meeting of the Alden Kindred of America, Inc. held on the grounds of the historic John Alden House in Duxbury, Massachusetts on August 4, 2001. The price is $35.00. The SML number assigned is SML-726. The Wayland Studios production code is W-8410. Special Note: This piece, an entirely new design by Woody Baston, is being cast locally. All copies of this figurine are currently being painted by Woody and his wife Margery. There is no known existing image of John and Priscilla known to exist. However, certain features of this piece were adapted from a contemporary style painting by renown Pennsylvania artist Thomas Vroman. Mr. Vroman's painting, pictured directly below, was unveiled at a special ceremony held at Plimoth Plantation in festivities connected with the100th anniversary Annual Meeting of the Alden Kindred of America in August, 2000 .
